Internet was originally for scientists
Most people spend more time on the internet than sleeping

5.1:
- Benefits of the internet: Ease of comunication and collaboration in tiny amounts of time, easier to find information for learning, entertainment is easy to acces
- Harmful effects of the internet: Can cause addiction, privacy issues for users, malware and ransomware is possible
5.2
- One can empower themselves by learning how to efficiently use tech/digital devices in order to help themselves and others. Learning how tech/computers works and programming can help understand how to use it better.
- One can help someone become empowered in a digital world by sharing their knowledge and access to computers. I could tutor in the Library in del norte for students that may not be as skilled in using a computer to the best of their abilities.
- Red Tape definitely hinders digital empowermnet, but doesn’t block it off completely, since there are always work arounds. For example, in DNHS, many websites and features are blocked in the school internet for safety reasons, but it can be circumvented by using a hotspot or VPN. Somewhere else link China for example has a lot of internet censorship and does not allow the full potential of the internet to be seen or used by many citizens, but that can also be worked around by using special vpn’s or relocating.

- Requires a lot of explicit data
- Name, address, thumbs up/thumbs down
- Also explicit data
- When you watch, what you binge, styles of shows
- Bias here: Netflix exclusives will show up first over other movies
- They want their content and subscriptions before the other movies
Computing innovations can reflect distinct human biases, because of biases written into the algorithm or biases in the data used by the innovation
Biases can be embedded in all levels of software, and can be unintentional or intentional
Examples:
- sweaty vs. casual games
  - Youtube kids
  - Tiktok
  - Facebook, instagram, snapchat
  - WeChat/Kakao Talk
Questions to ask:
- Is the bias enhancing the usage or is it intentionally excluding certain groups?
- It is hateful or harmful?

5.4

Widespread access to information and public data creates the identification of problems, development of solutions, and dissemination of results
Science has been affected by using citizen science or crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing or citizen science is research conducted by distributed individuals
They may not be scientists, but contribute to the research using their own devices
Using input from a large number or people via the internet
Human capabilities can be enhance through computational collaboration
Crowdsourcing can create new models for collaboration
Blockchain and cryptocurrency was made possible using crowdsourcing

5.3

The owner did not think it was intentional, since the reason behind this happening was most likely not including a diverse sample set of testers to test the feature. The people that did test it before release might not have had darker skin, which lead to the program being biased towards a certain skin color.
It is not very harmful, just unintended, and the program was definitely not intended to be harmful or exclude people from a certain race.
It should be corrected so that the feature works for all users, and there should be no limitations for certain users over others.
I would have a more diverse group of people for testing the feature so that more bias could be excluded.

5.4

If a student in our compsci class is creating a program to simulate the different classes compsci students go to after graduating based on many factors, they can use crowdsourcing by asking for data, each person’s grades, whether they have met the credit requirement for graduation, or gpa, and use it in their program to make a better simulation.
Our final project of making a resource for DN students to use for studying or practicing topics for their classes can be bettered with crowdsourcing by having a bug reporting page where users in del norte can point out bugs they find in the page or give feedback on what can be changed to make using the site easier.

The use of material created by someone else without permission and presented as one’s own is plagiarism and may have legal consequences
A creative commons license enables the free distribution of copyrighted work.
This can be used when the creator wants to give the other permission to share use and build upon their work
Open source: programs made freely available and may be modified without requesting permission
Open access: online research output free of any restriction on access.
Using computing to harm individuals or groups raises legal and ethnic concerns 5.6:
PII is information about someone that identifies or links them to things and can include:
Search engines can record and maintain history of searches
Websites can record history of people who viewed their page
Devices and websites can collect information about a user’s location
Technology enables the collection use, and exploitation of information about, by, and for individuals, groups, and institutions
Search engines can use search history to suggest websites
All of this information can be used in ways to create a harmful or negative impact.
PII can be stolen to stalk or steal the identity of someone for use in criminal acts
Once information is online, it is very difficult to delete
Programs can collect your location and log it
Social media information can be used by others
All of this can be used to infer private information

PII that we include in our CSP projects is our names, contact info, what school we go to, our previous projects/assignments.
I think that I am not very exposed, that there is little to none bad PII about we accessible to the public (or through nefarious methods)
A good password is long, random, and uses alphanumerics + special symbols. A bad password is short and easy to guess.
Symmetric encryptio uses 1 (private) key, Asymmetric encryption is more modern method and uses 2 keys (public and private).
When we deploy, we encode private information about the machine and user that made the deployment, such as IP address.
phishing methods like “you won a free walmart giftcard” or “click here for your refunds” are some things I used to look at and believe when I was youhnger and uneducated on privacy on the internet.

we chose GNU GPLv3 for our site so thought our education is free and people that access it can’t rehash it to sell for a profit. The education should be free for all.
